Increasing participation

A key priority for us is to ensure that everyone in Scotland shares the benefits that come from enjoying the outdoors.

We want everyone in Scotland to have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors – through outdoor recreation, volunteering or outdoor learning. This commitment is set out in our statement on Enjoying the outdoors.

To understand the barriers to getting out into nature that some people face we measure participation and carry out other research. Our outreach projects can then offer targeted ways for more people to enjoy and benefit from Scotland’s nature and landscapes.

Special effort is needed to offer people of all abilities and people from ethnic minorities and less advantaged communities a range of opportunities – plus the motivation and confidence to use them.

Ongoing research and survey work is also required to better understand environmental, social and demographic changes and how these affect the enjoyment of Scotland’s outdoors by all groups.
